Job Description:
L3Harris has an immediate need for a Lead Materials and Processes Engineer responsible for the evaluation, selection, testing, and analysis of non-metallic and composite materials used in Aerospace, Geospace, and Defense programs.
Lead material reviews and failure analyses including investigation of root cause and recommend disposition.
Responsibilities include interfacing with internal and external customers, suppliers, and material manufacturers relevant to our technical activities.
Analyze, research, and develop material characterization and their related application processes to optimize material selection and use in structures, systems, and subsystems.
Develop and analyzes material properties through material characterization testing, failure analysis, analytical chemistry techniques, and material compatibility testing for processes and design requirements.
Perform root cause analysis of material and hardware failures and provides effective solutions to production issues.
Perform failure analysis on complex systems and drive root cause corrective action.
Contamination identification control, testing, and analysis.
Create and issues supporting technical documents related to projects along with material and process specifications.
Work with Quality processes and industry standards such as Lean, Six-sigma, AS9100, NADCAP, ASTM, ICP, SAE, and ISO.
Essential Functions:
Characterize materials for use in Aerospace, Geospace, Ground, and Maritime designs, including suitability for manufacturing and extended use beyond manufacturer shelf life.
Design, develop, and modify processes and methods for the manufacture and utilization of various materials in production of deliverable hardware including electronic assemblies, and mechanical structures.
Participate in design processes including trade studies, supplier selection, concurrent design and development, material characterization, data analysis, and drawing reviews.
Serve as a resource to manufacturing areas on proper usage and selection of materials, especially adhesives, polymers, and composites.
Work with chemicals used for manufacturing and laboratory activities, and work with EH&S teams for safe handling and disposal of chemicals and materials.
Implement material and process control plans and other types of contractual deliverables such as non-standard approval requests (MUA, NSMAR, PMPR, MIUL), contamination control plans.
Provide guidance, coaching, and training to other employees, internal and external to our department, with varying expertise in materials.
Generate test plans and reports of completed work for dissemination to program/design teams, management and L3Harris customers.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant experience.
Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience.
In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.
Degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or related field.
Experience in laboratory or materials testing environment.
Experience with material or process failure analysis and root cause corrective action (RCCA) for metallic or polymer components.
Experience from proposal through execution in manufacturing.
Experience in MS Office Suite and developing written procedures and analytical reports.
Eligible for a security clearance.
Preferred Additional Skills:
Active Secret or TS/SCI clearance desired.
Industry participation in professional materials organizations such as ASM, NACE.
Publications or academic research papers.
Experience in non-destructive testing including ultrasonic or xray imaging.
Experience with space or aerospace systems.
